‘Sweet Charity’ returned to Capitol Market in Charleston on Tuesday, bringing desserts, friendly competition and community support together for a fundraiser benefiting older residents.

Local chefs compete for People’s Choice Award

Sweet Charity is a dessert competition with a fundraising component. Local chefs and bakers showcase their skills while competing for the coveted People’s Choice Award.

Nine organizations participated in the competition: Café Appalachia; Black Diamond Council Girl Scout Troop 4847; Edgewood Summit; Rainy Day Bakes; CoCo’s Kitchen & Café; Delights by Davis; Obscura Bakery; Burton’s Bakery; and The Stone Kitchen Bakery.

The entries were evaluated by three judges: Zack Harold of FestivALL; Jessica A. Martin of So JAM Fancy; and Keyarna “Chef Ke” Frederick, who won last year’s People’s Choice Award and Judges’ Award for Taste.

Proceeds support Faith in Action

All proceeds from the event benefit Faith in Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley, a nonprofit organization that helps older people remain independent.

“One of the things I love about the community coming out for this event is because they love sweet charity, right?” said Jennifer Waggener, executive director of Faith in Action. “They come out for it and they come out for the desserts and for the evening and for the good time. But they learn about faith in action. And so our hope is that, you know, they’ll see the people that are involved in the organization. And they’ll want to get involved themselves, because it’s a great volunteer opportunity. There’s literally a job for anyone.”
