Ireland Squad Embraces Noel McNamaraâs Return to the National Setup
Ireland’s national squad has warmly welcomed the appointment of coach Noel McNamara ahead of their upcoming November Nations Championship fixtures. Fullback Hugo Keenan and back rower Jack Conan have both highlighted the broad expertise and fresh perspective McNamara brings following successful coaching stints across multiple hemispheres and leading leagues.
McNamara previously built a strong reputation within Irish rugby during a five-year tenure in Dublin, serving as Leinsterâs academy manager and head coach of Leinster âAâ. It was during this period that he crossed paths with several current senior internationals. His domestic credentials were further solidified on the international stage when he coached the Ireland Under-20 side to an emphatic Grand Slam triumph in 2019.
Global Coaching Journey Yields European Success
In 2021, McNamara expanded his horizons by moving to South Africa to join the Durban-based Sharks as their attack and backs coach. Following that southern hemisphere campaign, he transitioned to French club rugby in 2023 by linking up with Bordeaux, where his tactical input helped steer the Top 14 side to back-to-back European titles.
Speaking from the Ireland training camp ahead of the November international window, Hugo Keenan reflected positively on the coach’s return to the national fold, calling it an exciting appointment
.
It’s good to have him on board and I think that’s the general feedback amongst the squad,
Keenan said. I’m sure he’s got a different perspective of things, by getting out of the building, going down to South Africa, challenging himself down there, and going so well and thriving at Bordeaux.
Squad Anticipates New Dimension Under McNamaraâs Guidance
Leinster and Ireland back-row forward Jack Conan echoed Keenan’s enthusiasm during an appearance on the Ireland Rugby Social podcast, noting that the coaching addition will be huge
for the team.
It’ll be good to have him back. I never really worked with him directly before, but a great man and rugby brain,
he explained. The lads are very excited. I think change is good and hopefully he can elevate us and bring some success that he’s had at Bordeaux and push us to a new level.
Why This Matters
McNamaraâs integration into the Ireland setup represents a strategic injection of varied tactical experience at a crucial time. Having coached in South Africa’s domestic system and navigated the physical and strategic demands of French rugby with Bordeaux, McNamara provides tactical insights that differ from the traditional Irish provincial pathway. As Ireland prepares for high-stakes Nations Championship clashes in November, his proven track record of developing elite young talent and steering top-tier teams to European silverware is viewed as an important catalyst for the squad’s continued tactical evolution.
