A significant difference in preparation emerged before kickoff. The 49ers arrived in Melbourne a full week before the game, while the Rams opted to spend just over 24 hours in Australia. San Francisco wide receiver Deebo Samuel emphasized the impact of the travel schedule after the game. “I love when they [the Rams] came out and they were booing. We were out here for a week. We enjoyed the city. I don’t think you can fly 16 hours and be ready to play,” Samuel told Australia’s Channel Seven.
Second-Quarter Surge Decides Contest
The game turned decisively in the second quarter. After an early 49ers field goal, Rams running back Kyren Williams scored a touchdown to give Los Angeles a four-point lead. San Francisco responded immediately, with Demarcus Robinson hauling in a touchdown pass before halftime to reclaim the advantage.
Momentum shifted firmly to the visitors in the second half. Receiver Mike Evans found the end zone, followed by a touchdown catch from Samuel. A second 49ers field goal sealed the 27-7 final margin.
Quarterback Brock Purdy orchestrated the offense efficiently, completing 25 of 34 passes for 205 yards and three touchdown passes.
McVay Takes Full Responsibility
Rams head coach Sean McVay refused to cite travel or scheduling as mitigating factors in the post-game press conference. “I make no excuses. Whether you want to say it’s about travel, whatever. We just weren’t good enough,” McVay stated. “I didn’t coach good enough, and we’ll look at it and we’ll move forward.”
