Verstappen Secures Podium at Italian Grand Prix Despite Straight-Line Speed Deficit
Max Verstappen claimed a hard-fought third-place finish at the Italian Grand Prix, describing the result as “very good” given Red Bull’s lack of straight-line deployment compared to rival machinery. Starting from fifth on the grid at Monza, the four-time World Champion made up positions early and briefly led the race following a restart triggered by Charles Leclerc’s crash.
Race Progress and Key Battles
Verstappen climbed to third in the opening laps and seized the lead during the restart phase. He was subsequently overtaken by the Mercedes pairing of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. A later Virtual Safety Car period allowed Verstappen to pit for fresh tyres, setting up a final charge where he engaged in multiple wheel-to-wheel battles.
Reflecting on the aggressive driving required, Verstappen admitted: I had to send it many times around the outside
to defend and reclaim positions.
Verstappen: Deployment Deficit ‘Cost Us a Lot’
In his post-race analysis, the Dutch driver pinpointed a fundamental performance gap on the high-speed straights.
I tried to battle but we were just too slow on the straight,said Verstappen.We just lacked the same deployment, and that basically cost us a lot because at one point it’s not defendable anymore.
He explained that once Russell and Antonelli were ahead, he could utilize their tow to activate his Overtake Mode, but the underlying deficit remained.
Once of course I had Kimi and George in front of me, I could just hang into the Overtake Mode. We just lack a bit of deployment on tracks like this, but for us to be on the podium is a very good result.
Late-Braking Tactics the Only Option
Asked whether the overtaking opportunities were a positive takeaway, Verstappen was pragmatic about the necessity of his approach.
I mean, I had to.
I was so slow on the straight that the only chance was just to try and brake late and try to get my positions back all the time, in the start, if we were battling, but it worked. So, of course, happy with that and happy to be on the podium.
The podium finish extends Verstappen’s championship lead, though the team faces clear questions regarding power unit deployment efficiency at low-drag circuits.
