LN4 Fusion’s Formula 2 Bid Nears a Decision
Lando Norris’s new racing team, LN4 Fusion, is awaiting confirmation on whether it will be included on the FIA Formula 2 grid for the 2027, 2028 and 2029 seasons. Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel confirmed that the championship is close to completing its latest team selection, placing LN4 Fusion’s application among the decisions expected in the near future.
Michel explained that Formula 2 conducts a team selection every three years, with the current process also linked to the introduction of a new car. He said the championship is evaluating multiple applications, including the request from Norris’s organization, and is expected to produce a list of selected teams within approximately one to one-and-a-half months.
“Well, we do a new selection every three years, so that’s where we are when we have a new car as well,” Michel said. “We’re in the process of this selection at the moment, so we will come up with a list of teams within one month, I would say, one month and a half. So, it’s going to be quite soon.
“And of course, Lando Norris’ team has been applying for a licence, and we’re looking at it like we’re looking at any other request. There are a lot of teams that would like to join Formula 2 at the moment.
“It’s a very healthy championship, but we’re not going to increase the number of teams because that’s something that is quite important for the health of the teams. And also, you know, I think 22 drivers in F2 is good enough when you have 22 drivers in F1, and that you know that some years you will have seats in F1, some other years it will be more difficult.
“So, we need to be also quite careful about it. So, we’ll keep the same number of teams, and the results of this selection will come quite soon.”
Although Michel described LN4 Fusion as one of numerous teams seeking to enter, he stressed that every application is being assessed in the same way. The decision will not expand the grid: Formula 2 plans to maintain its current number of teams because, according to Michel, preserving that balance is important for the health of the championship and its existing operations.
LN4 Fusion Builds Its Formula 3 Foundation
Norris launched LN4 Fusion in early September. The team confirmed that it had acquired the assets of AIX Racing and intended to apply for a Formula 2 entry. It also secured a Formula 3 entry through the end of 2027, with Gabriel Gomez and James Egozi confirmed as its drivers.
Norris’s stated aim with LN4 Fusion is to provide drivers with the type of opportunity he received during his own career. Reflecting on having his name associated with the team for a positive reason, he described the experience as a source of pride.
“It was very special to look back on and hear about these things,” he said. “I guess you don’t really think about it at the time but having your name written down somewhere, especially for a good reason, is something to be very proud about. So I was happy I was that first one, and the first of what will be many.”

He also emphasized that reaching Formula 1 requires more than talent alone. Norris identified the importance of having the right people, support and opportunities at the appropriate stage of a driver’s development, all of which he wants LN4 Fusion to offer.
“I’ve been really lucky to have some amazing people around me throughout my career, and I know that getting to Formula 1 takes so much more than just talent. You need the right people around you, the right support and the right opportunities at the right time,.”
Norris Heads to the United States Grand Prix
Norris’s own Formula 1 campaign continues in Austin. The McLaren driver is sixth in the championship standings on 201 points as he heads to the United States Grand Prix, which is scheduled for 23-25 October.
His immediate focus remains the season in Texas, but the Formula 2 selection process provides a separate opportunity for LN4 Fusion to take the next step in Norris’s broader ambition of building a team capable of developing drivers for the top levels of international motorsport.
Why This Matters
Formula 2’s limited number of places makes LN4 Fusion’s application part of a competitive selection rather than an automatic expansion. Michel said numerous teams want to join the championship, while the decision to keep the grid size unchanged reflects a desire to protect the financial and operational health of the teams already in the series.
The proposed 22-driver Formula 2 field also mirrors the size of the Formula 1 grid, according to Michel. He noted that the number of available Formula 1 seats can vary from year to year, another factor behind the championship’s cautious approach to expansion.
For LN4 Fusion, the immediate next step is the publication of Formula 2’s selected-team list, which Michel expects within roughly one to one-and-a-half months. Meanwhile, the organization already has a foundation in Formula 3, where Gabriel Gomez and James Egozi are contracted through 2027. Norris will also remain occupied with his Formula 1 title pursuit in Austin on 23-25 October.
