Following a historic triumph at the Mexico Grand Prix where he was celebrated on the podium by Formula 1 rivals Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, Andrea Kimi Antonelli has had little opportunity to absorb the reality of becoming the sport’s youngest-ever world champion. The Mercedes prodigy endured a relentless schedule post-race, fulfilling commercial obligations in Mexico City before taking an overnight flight to Sao Paulo. Once in Brazil, Antonelli met with the family of his childhood hero Ayrton Senna and completed partner appearances for title sponsor Petronas prior to facing the media at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace.
Overwhelmed by a Historic Milestone
Speaking to reporters at Interlagos ahead of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Antonelli reflected on the overwhelming sequence of events that unfolded across the ongoing triple-header. The rapid turnaround left the young Italian longing for a moment of quiet to process his maiden world title.
“I had such a crazy sequence of events in these days,” Antonelli said on Thursday. “I won the championship, then spent time with the Senna family, which was already an incredible event. So, definitely I would have liked a bit more time to just sit down and reflect and realise what happened.
“It still feels surreal, you know? This morning, the team gave me a special t-shirt and when I looked at it, I was like: ‘Wow. Is this even real?’ There was just so much going on at once that it’s kind of overloading my head as well.”

Emotional Mexico Celebrations and the Road to Shanghai
Formula 1 management, Mercedes, and the FIA coordinated a customized podium sequence in Mexico City to commemorate Antonelli’s coronation. During the festivities, the selection of the classic Italian aria Nessun Dorma struck a deeply personal chord with the new champion.
The operatic masterpiece held special family significance before Sarà Perché Ti Amo accompanied the podium scene—the same anthem that soundtracked his famous comeback victory at Monza. “The first song was very emotional for me because it was a song that my grandfather always used to listen to, so it was very special to hear that,” Antonelli said afterwards on Sunday night, reduced to tears. “I think he would be very proud.”
Despite the grand celebrations in Mexico, Antonelli believes his historic feat will truly sink in during the off-season. He pointed to the FIA Prize Giving Ceremony on 12 December in Shanghai as the defining milestone where he will physically receive the world champion’s trophy.
Eyes on 2027 and the Constructors’ Championship
With four rounds remaining in the 2026 championship, Antonelli has amassed nine grand prix victories and sealed the individual crown, giving him the unique opportunity to race without points-related anxiety. However, the Italian driver insists he will not let his foot off the gas in Sao Paulo.
“I’m actually very excited to be here,” he said despite the accumulated fatigue. “It’s a good opportunity to try to finish the season on top, but I also feel like my 2027 preparation starts now.
“It’s going to be important to finish the season strong in order to gain confidence ahead of 2027. And then once the season is over, I get a few days to enjoy everything else.”
While the pressure of the drivers’ fight has evaporated, Antonelli remains focused on maintaining the competitive edge that brought him success, particularly with Mercedes seeking to secure the team title in Brazil.
“I will not be as tense now that the championship is done, I think I will be able to enjoy the driving even more,” he acknowledged. “But the important thing is not to be too relaxed. It’s still important to have the same intensity. Of course, we’ve still got the constructors’ championship to win and it will be very nice to clinch it this weekend.
“So, on my side, I will just think about winning the race. I’m going to try to go on track with the same determination and intensity, same hunger.
“Of course, more relaxed… but not too much.”
Why This Matters
Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s early title triumph marks a generational transition in Formula 1. By clinching the crown before the conclusion of the triple-header, Antonelli not only establishes himself as the sport’s youngest champion, but he also affords Mercedes tactical freedom over the final four races. The silver arrows can now channel operational resources toward closing out the Constructors’ Championship while building foundational confidence for their 2027 car development cycle under the technical regulations.
