Liverpool youngster Lewis Koumas has disclosed that he only learned of head coach Andoni Iraola’s intention to retain him at Anfield towards the conclusion of the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.

Iraola’s early decision

According to the 20-year-old forward, Iraola had already determined during the opening week of pre-season preparations that Koumas featured in his first-team plans for the upcoming campaign. Despite the manager’s early conviction, the player himself remained uncertain about his immediate future at the club throughout much of the summer tour.

Uncertainty during US tour

The revelation highlights the communication gap that can exist between coaching staff decisions and player awareness during hectic pre-season schedules. Koumas admitted he “remained unsure about his future at the time” even as Iraola had internally confirmed the academy graduate’s role in the squad.

Academy pathway continues

The development represents a significant vote of confidence in the Wales youth international, who has progressed through Liverpool’s academy system. Iraola’s decision to integrate Koumas into the senior setup aligns with the club’s tradition of promoting homegrown talent when they demonstrate sufficient quality and readiness for Premier League football.
