Bearman Previews New Haas Dynamic Alongside Debutant Camara
Haas driver Ollie Bearman has played down suggestions of an internal rivalry as fellow Ferrari Driver Academy stablemate Rafael Camara prepares to make his unexpected Formula 1 race debut at the upcoming Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Camara had initially been signed to join the American outfit in a full-time capacity starting in 2027. However, Haas’ recent decision that Esteban Ocon will not race for the team for the remainder of the year accelerated the young Brazilian’s arrival to the pinnacle of motorsport.
Camara, who is currently leading the charge toward the Formula 2 championship title, enters the Interlagos paddock facing a steep learning curve. The Brazilian prospect has not yet piloted Haas’ 2026-specification car, possessing seat time limited to an older-generation chassis test that originally convinced Team Principal Ayao Komatsu of his outright potential. Looking forward to the weekend in Sao Paulo, Bearman views Camara’s early arrival not as an internal test of supremacy, but as a chance to forge their working relationship.
I think this is a bit of a preview for next year,
Bearman told the media in Brazil. I don’t see it as a shoot-out but of course it’s good to have a team mate that’s going to push you – that’s what we want as drivers.
We’re competitive, we want to have somebody that’s going to force us to level up and I think Rafa will do that, as Esteban did, as all of my team mates have done. I think the eyes are going to be on us but it’s an exciting battle.
For sure it will be a bit more pressure [on Camara] but I think the opportunity of having your first F1 race at home is pretty unique, not many people get that. Only the Australians get that,
Bearman added. I don’t know many people who got to do their first-ever F1 race at home. Of course the circumstances are challenging, but I think it’s a great opportunity for him, and I’m really happy for him. To get an F1 debut is one of those key moments in life, so very nice.
Constructors’ Battle Intensifies as Bearman Assumes Team Leadership
The sudden change in driver lineup arrives during a difficult stretch of the season for Bearman and Haas. Following consecutive retirements across the recent triple-header, Bearman arrives in Brazil aware that Audi has closed the gap in the Constructors’ Championship to just four points behind Haas. Despite the mounting championship pressure, the British driver is relying on his previous experience as a last-minute substitute at Interlagos to guide the team forward under potentially volatile weather conditions.
Of course our goal as a team is to try and retain P7 in the Constructors’. Mexico was a challenging weekend for us, losing out on points the way we did, and for the rest of the season we just need to try and score as much as we can, as often as we can,
Bearman explained.
This weekend is an opportunity, with the weather as well. It’s definitely going to be a challenging one for everybody, especially with Rafa jumping in. But he’ll be up to speed quickly I’m sure and let’s see how the weather looks.
Of course I had the opportunity to jump in two years ago where it was a very challenging event, a lot of rain on Sunday especially. But with that weather comes opportunities and I hope that we can make the most of them,
he continued. It’s funny how many coincidences there are, but it’s nice to be the more experienced driver and I’m excited to see what changes to be honest.
I feel like I was kind of working towards leading the team and I knew that was a very important role. I don’t think much will suddenly change this weekend and the main goal is of course to score points – that doesn’t change.
Why This Matters
Camara’s accelerated debut marks a critical shift for Haas as the squad evaluates its long-term operational dynamic between two young drivers tied to Ferrari’s development pipeline. With Ocon departing the cockpit earlier than anticipated, the immediate focus turns to damage limitation in the Teams’ Championship standings. Retaining seventh place over Audi carries substantial financial and developmental implications, leaving no margin for error as Bearman takes on the de facto team leader responsibilities while Camara adapts to Formula 1 under the unpredictable skies of Interlagos.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Rafael Camara driving for Haas at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix?
Camara’s Formula 1 debut was moved forward after Haas confirmed that regular driver Esteban Ocon will not race for the team for the remainder of the season. Although Camara originally earned a full-time seat for 2027, the open cockpit provided an immediate path for his debut on home soil.
What is the current championship situation for Haas heading into Brazil?
Haas is fighting to maintain seventh place in the Constructors’ Championship. After Bearman registered non-finishes in the last two races, Audi has cut the deficit to just four points, making points finishes critical across the final rounds of the campaign.
Does Rafael Camara have prior experience driving Haas’ current F1 car?
No. Camara has not yet driven the 2026-spec car. His previous Formula 1 running with Haas was restricted to an older-spec testing session that helped convince Team Principal Ayao Komatsu of his driving capabilities.
