Mark Reuss Celebrates Sergio Perez’s Historic 300th Formula 1 Grand Prix
General Motors president Mark Reuss has issued glowing praise for Cadillac Formula 1 driver Sergio Perez ahead of the Mexican driver’s 300th career start in the world championship. Reuss expressed deep pride in Perez’s contributions both on and off the circuit, pointing out that his veteran presence has been a critical asset during the American automotive giant’s inaugural campaign in the sport.
By entering his 300th Grand Prix, Perez is set to enter an elite circle in Formula 1 history. He will become only the seventh driver to ever reach the triple-century threshold, following in the footsteps of Rubens Barrichello, Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen, and Michael Schumacher. The milestone takes on added emotional significance as it arrives in front of his home crowd at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City.
Home Festivities and Long-Term Cadillac Commitment
The celebrations surrounding the Mexican Grand Prix weekend feature extensive fan and corporate engagements. As part of the festivities marking his 300th race, Perez performed a demonstration run down the famous Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City. The itinerary also features a dedicated visit with General Motors employees at the company’s local headquarters before Perez steps into the cockpit of the MAC-26 challenger on track. Adding to the celebratory momentum, Cadillac has confirmed an extended contract with Perez that secures his seat through the 2029 season.
Speaking about the landmark occasion at the Autosport Business Exchange New York, Reuss emphasized the operational and cultural weight of the weekend: It’s a big deal.
It’ll be Checo’s 300th, really proud to have him driving for our team, and he’s given us so much feedback, and expertise on someone who’s run the tracks – and [Valtteri] Bottas – both giving us real feedback around the car, the track, and what the differences are and how to build the models, and how to get those simulations right as we move through and experience our first season.
This is a big deal for him. It’s also a big deal for General Motors. Our Mexico headquarters is in Mexico City, so he’s going to speak to our dealers, he’s going to speak to our employees, and I can’t wait to go and be part of that with him, and all of his fans.
He’s just a great person, who he is as a person; because he’s not only a wonderful driver, a wonderful representative for Cadillac and General Motors and Formula 1, but he’s just a really good person.
Reuss reiterated his sentiments regarding the Mexican driver’s presence, stating: It’s an honour to have him.
Veteran Composure Amid the Maiden Season Journey
Perez and Finnish race winner Valtteri Bottas partnered at Cadillac to spearhead the General Motors brand’s foray into Formula 1. Entering the championship as a brand-new operation naturally presented sharp engineering hurdles, but Reuss explained that the temperament, dedication, and patience of both drivers have been central to establishing foundational progress.
They’re very different,
Reuss noted regarding his driver pairing. Any driver in any series is always, if they’re really good, very different.
In that professionalism and precision, whatever series it is, whether it’s endurance, Formula 1, off-road, trucks, I don’t care what it is, you can see it in the champions, and they strive to do the best, the very best they can every race and if they don’t, if something happens – you can’t win every race, no one can win every race – when they have a day that is unfortunate or mistakes were made, they move on from that race, and perfect their craft, whether it’s with the car, or themselves or their physicality, or whatever that is.
They drive for that perfection, and both of these gentlemen do that, and they really understand what it takes and the process. I’m very, very happy that they’re patient with us to be honest.
That takes a special person, and both of those guys have it.
Why This Matters
Launching a start-up Formula 1 project requires extensive simulation accuracy, engineering calibration, and organizational composure. By securing proven winners in Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas, Cadillac bypassed the steep learning curve associated with inexperienced lineups. Perez’s landmark 300th race highlights a career of exceptional longevity at the absolute pinnacle of motorsport. Furthermore, retaining Perez on a contract through 2029 stabilizes Cadillac’s sporting identity and delivers vital technical continuity as General Motors establishes its presence in the global championship.
