Audi outlines new Formula 1 campus in Switzerland
Audi has revealed plans for a new campus dedicated to its Formula 1 operations in Hinwil, Switzerland, as the German manufacturer increases its commitment to the championship. The new development will be located on Zurichstrasse, less than one kilometre from the team’s existing facility.
Audi joined the Formula 1 grid at the start of this season after taking over the Sauber team and its factory in Hinwil. Parts of the new campus have already become operational during the summer, while the full development is scheduled to be completed by 2030.
The existing site on Wildbachstrasse will continue operating before being redeveloped to support the team’s manufacturing and wind tunnel activities. Audi’s Formula 1 power units will continue to be developed and manufactured at its facility in Neuburg, Germany, while its technical centre in Bicester, United Kingdom, will remain in operation.
“the existing site on Wildbachstrasse will remain fully operational and will subsequently be redeveloped as the team’s manufacturing centre and windtunnel operation.
“Formula 1 power units will continue to be developed and manufactured in Neuburg, Germany, while the team will retain its technical centre in Bicester, United Kingdom.”
Hinwil campus to support Audi’s long-term F1 plans
Audi currently sits eighth in the Formula 1 teams’ standings. The manufacturer hopes that continued investment in its facilities will help the team move up the grid in the coming years.
Team Principal Mattia Binotto said the new campus would be central to Audi’s efforts to build its Formula 1 operation and attract highly qualified personnel.
“The campus will play an important role in helping us attract and retain world-class talent while providing the foundations required to achieve our long-term ambitions,” said Team Principal Mattia Binotto.
Binotto said the facility would be designed to encourage collaboration among the engineers, designers, mechanics and specialists required to develop a competitive Formula 1 team.
“Building a successful Formula 1 team is ultimately about people. The best engineers, designers, mechanics and specialists want to work in an environment that allows them to collaborate, innovate and perform at their highest level. The campus will help us create exactly that environment.
He also described the project as an opportunity to shape the future of Audi Revolut F1 Team around its own workforce, culture and ambitions rather than adapting to an existing facility.
“What makes this project particularly special is that it allows us to shape the future of Audi Revolut F1 Team from the ground up.
“Opportunities like this are rare in modern Formula 1. We are not simply moving into an existing facility; we are creating a home designed around our people, our culture and our ambitions. This campus is an important part of that journey.
Binotto added that Hinwil would remain central to the team’s future and thanked the Municipality of Hinwil for its support.
“We are proud that the next chapter of Audi Revolut F1 Team will be written in Hinwil and I would like place on record my thanks to the Municipality of Hinwil itself.”
Why This Matters
Audi’s Hinwil campus represents a major expansion of the manufacturer’s Formula 1 infrastructure after its takeover of Sauber. The project will give Audi a dedicated base for its Swiss operations while maintaining its power-unit programme in Germany and its technical centre in the United Kingdom.
With construction scheduled to be completed by 2030, the campus is intended to provide the facilities and working environment Audi believes are necessary to attract talent and improve its competitive position. The team’s current eighth-place standing underlines the scale of the challenge as it develops its Formula 1 programme.
