Audi Formula 1 plans new Hinwil campus
The Audi Formula 1 team has announced a long-term development plan centered on a new campus near its existing factory in Hinwil, Switzerland. The project is intended to strengthen the team’s facilities and help Audi attract and retain staff as it builds its Formula 1 operation.
“Elements of the new Campus on Zurichstrasse became operational in summer 2026, with the full development scheduled for completion in 2030,” said the team in a statement.
The new campus will be located on Zurichstrasse, while the team’s existing site on Wildbachstrasse will also be redeveloped. Audi said the wind tunnel at the Wildbachstrasse facility will be retained. The team has already identified substantial modernization needs at Hinwil, including upgrades to its Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) cluster and wind tunnel.
Hinwil’s role in Audi’s Formula 1 expansion
Peter Sauber founded his eponymous team in 1970, establishing Hinwil as its base. Sauber ran Mercedes’ sportscar racing programme during the 1980s before entering Formula 1 in 1993. BMW bought the team in 2005 and sold it back to Sauber in 2009.
Audi acquired the operation in stages and took full control in January 2025. The Hinwil facility had operated with a highly restricted budget since BMW withdrew, leaving Audi to make significant investments in the team’s infrastructure.
The wind tunnel has a notable connection to Sauber’s Formula 1 history. It was funded with money received from Mercedes to release Kimi Raikkonen from his Sauber contract so he could move to McLaren in 2002.
Audi F1 facilities in Switzerland, Germany and the UK
Audi’s engine development facility will remain in Neuberg, while the team will continue to maintain offices in Bicester, England. The UK satellite facility was established to recruit experienced personnel who were unwilling or unable to relocate to Switzerland.
Mattia Binotto, Audi F1 CEO and team principal, said the Hinwil campus would be central to Audi’s effort to build the organization and create a working environment designed around collaboration and innovation.
“The campus will play an important role in helping us attract and retain world-class talent while providing the foundations required to achieve our long-term ambitions,” said Audi CEO and team principal Mattia Binotto.
“Building a successful Formula 1 team is ultimately about people. The best engineers, designers, mechanics and specialists want to work in an environment that allows them to collaborate, innovate and perform at their highest level. The campus will help us create exactly that environment.”
“What makes this project particularly special is that it allows us to shape the future of Audi Revolut F1 Team from the ground up. Opportunities like this are rare in modern Formula 1.
“We are not simply moving into an existing facility; we are creating a home designed around our people, our culture and our ambitions. This campus is an important part of that journey.
“We are proud that the next chapter of Audi Revolut F1 Team will be written in Hinwil and I would like place on record my thanks to the Municipality of Hinwil itself.”

Why This Matters
Audi’s Hinwil campus represents a major investment in the infrastructure of its Formula 1 operation. The project brings together the team’s plans for a modernized Swiss base, while preserving the wind tunnel and maintaining Audi’s wider technical and recruitment network in Neuberg and Bicester.
With elements of the Zurichstrasse campus scheduled to become operational in summer 2026 and the full development targeted for 2030, the project establishes a long-term timetable for Audi’s expansion. Binotto’s comments also underline the team’s focus on attracting engineers, designers, mechanics and other specialists as it develops its organization.
