Arvid Lindblad set for power unit penalties at Malaysian Grand Prix
Arvid Lindblad is set to start from the back of the grid for Formula 1’s return to Malaysia after a series of power unit penalties are applied at Sepang. The Racing Bulls driver will exceed the permitted allocation of several power unit components during this weekend’s race.
Lindblad is expected to use a fifth internal combustion engine, turbocharger and exhaust. Formula 1 permits a penalty-free maximum of four units of each component, and Lindblad had reached that limit at the previous race in Azerbaijan.
The decision to accept penalties in Malaysia indicates that Lindblad’s earlier powertrain components are no longer available for use. Red Bull-owned Racing Bulls appears to have determined that Sepang offers the best opportunity to move beyond the remaining component pool and absorb the resulting grid penalties.
Ancillary components remain within the permitted allocation
Lindblad also used a new set of power unit “ancillary components” in Baku. These parts include elements of the fuel system, wastegate, oil tank and cooling system. However, that replacement did not take him beyond the permitted allocation of six sets of ancillary components.
The penalties will come after Lindblad secured seventh place in Azerbaijan. He avoided a penalty for contact with his team-mate Liam Lawson during the restart, after moving to the right at Turn 1 while attempting to avoid Esteban Ocon and locking a wheel. The resulting contact tipped Lawson’s car into a spin.
Lindblad recovered to finish seventh in Azerbaijan
Despite the incident, Lindblad recovered strongly and completed overtakes on both Haas drivers. He also managed to overlap Esteban Ocon at the finish line, allowing him to be classified seventh by a margin of just 0.03 seconds.
Reflecting on the incident, Lindblad stated:
“We discussed it internally, what happened, and I know what I’d do differently in future.
“I’ve apologised already and yeah, it’s done now. I know what I’ll do differently in future. We’ve discussed it, so just looking forward to Malaysia now.”
Why This Matters
Lindblad’s expected penalties underline the importance of power unit management under Formula 1’s component allocation rules. By taking the grid drop at Sepang, Racing Bulls can preserve the use of its remaining penalty-free components for later races, while accepting the sporting disadvantage at a venue the team considers the most suitable opportunity to do so.
