Alex Brundle Highlights Pressure on George Russell in Baku
George Russell faced intense pressure from Max Verstappen during the closing stages of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after a safety car erased the Mercedes driver’s commanding advantage. Verstappen was immediately behind Russell at the restart, but Russell defended his lead to secure victory in Baku by just 0.1 seconds.
Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, F1 TV pundit Alex Brundle said the contrasting championship situations of Russell and Verstappen made the Red Bull driver especially dangerous. Brundle noted that Russell had little to lose in the title fight, while Verstappen was focused on taking the race victory.
“The other thing is you think George Russell’s got nothing to lose at this stage in the championship, Verstappen properly has nothing to lose apart from the opportunity to take a race victory,”
Brundle said Russell would have been under enormous pressure watching Verstappen push his Red Bull to the limit on soft tyres while attempting to close the gap.
“That is like nightmare fuel, seeing Max Verstappen skidding up, tapping walls on a set of soft tyres behind you, just desperate to make your life as difficult as possible.”
Russell Reveals How Verstappen Nearly Took the Lead
Russell acknowledged that the final stages became tense, despite Mercedes producing strong pace throughout the weekend. The British driver said he and Verstappen were significantly quicker than the rest of the field, building a gap of almost one second per lap over their rivals.
“It was a great weekend. Got a bit tense towards the end,”

Russell told Sky Sports F1:
“Max was really pushing hard and our pace was incredible, the two of us, we were pulling almost a second a lap to everybody else.”
A yellow flag on the final lap created another scare for Russell. He backed off when the flag appeared, but said he temporarily lost turbo power when he returned to the throttle, allowing Verstappen to close in.
“And then when that yellow flag came out, I backed off. And when I went back on the power, I had no turbo, so when I had no power, that’s when he almost passed me. So, yeah, great weekend all in all.”
George Russell Cuts Championship Gap to Kimi Antonelli
Russell’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix victory reduced his deficit to Mercedes teammate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli to 66 points. Antonelli leads the standings with 302 points, while Russell is second on 236. Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton occupies third place with 199 points.
Why This Matters
The Baku result strengthened George Russell’s position in the championship and demonstrated how narrow the margin can be between victory and defeat after a safety-car restart. Max Verstappen’s late charge placed Russell under sustained pressure, but the Mercedes driver maintained enough control to secure the win and reduce the gap to Kimi Antonelli in the title standings.
