Jeremy Clarkson has revealed he has no plans to maintain a restrictive diet following his recent cancer scare. The Clarkson’s Farm star disclosed he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer after doctors discovered a tumour during a routine medical checkup in May. Since his recovery, he has used his platform to encourage others to attend cancer screenings.
Clarkson Prioritizes Joy Over Strict Dietary Rules
After being unwell for a short period, Clarkson is back to his regular routine. His girlfriend, Lisa Hogan, reportedly advised him to modify his diet following the diagnosis. However, speaking to The Times, the presenter made it clear he refuses to adopt a joyless lifestyle in the name of longevity.
“Sure, I can eat less and more healthily. I can become a herbivore, and yes, I can got for 20-mile hikes and do 20,000 steps a day,” he said. “But the truth is, there has to be some joy in life as well.”
“And not drinking and not eating a pork chop means there is less joy in life. And I haven’t worked my a*** off for 40 years to have no joy in my old age.”
“So I’m having joy in my old age.”
Health Adjustments Focus on Moderation
Despite his rejection of extreme lifestyle changes, Clarkson acknowledged he has made practical adjustments to safeguard his health, partly motivated by a desire to see his grandchildren grow up. These changes include driving slower, incorporating more vegetables into his meals, and walking more for exercise.
On-Air Diagnosis Shocked Co-Stars
The diagnosis was first revealed on Clarkson’s Farm during a conversation with co-stars Charlie Ireland and Kaleb Cooper. The trio had been discussing harvest plans when Clarkson broke the news.
“I’ve got cancer.”
“I had a medical, you remember back in May. I disappeared off the other week and I had a biopsy and it is cancer and it’s aggressive, but it’s really early so the treatment will be, you know.”
“I was praying we could get the harvest done and then I could go and get some treatment but it’s going to be slap bang in the middle.”
Advocating for Early Detection
Since going into remission, Clarkson has spoken publicly about his experience multiple times, urging people in at-risk groups to overcome embarrassment and get checked. He recounted a conversation with former UK Prime Minister David Cameron, who also received treatment for prostate cancer.
“I was talking to David [Cameron] about it earlier this morning,” said Clarkson. “He said the amount of people that come up to him is mostly in public conveniences and say, ‘If you hadn’t owned up to it, I wouldn’t have got checked’, and they wouldn’t have found it.”
“So now there’s a group of us, [restaurant critic] Giles Coren, David, me, one or two other people, and we meet for lunch every so often.”
