Helen Mirren plays legendary novelist Patricia Highsmith in A Talent for Murder, a suspenseful new film directed by Anton Corbijn and written by Joanna Murray-Smith.

The movie stars Alden Ehrenreich (Weapons, Solo) as Edward Ridgeway, a man sent by his New York publisher to Switzerland to persuade the author of The Talented Mr. Ripley to write one final installment in her acclaimed Ripley series. However, another publisher representative was sent to make the same request—and no one has heard from him since.

As the trailer reveals, Highsmith’s home is filled with an unsettling number of guns and knives.

Helen Mirren plays Patricia Highsmith in a dangerous writing game

Highsmith gives Ridgeway one night to prove he can “inhabit the mind of a killer” before she agrees to write anything. The two then begin a crash course in Highsmith-style crime fiction.

First, they must find their target: a glamorous woman with an equally striking name, Clementine Harriet Balfour, played by House of the Dragon star Olivia Cooke. She is “destined for money” from her great-aunt.

But as Ridgeway becomes more deeply involved in Highsmith’s twisted literary game, the darkness of her fiction begins to feel dangerously real.

A Talent for Murder arrives in cinemas on October 23.
