Paula Abdul’s ‘Totally Hot’ Comment and the Audition That Went Viral
At the time, Ritchson was working as a fashion model. His audition became memorable after judge Paula Abdul described him as ‘totally hot’, joking that this ‘didn’t influence her decision… that much’. Recalling the moment he was cut, Ritchson said he remained relatively unfazed, but noted the dramatic reaction of another eliminated contestant who ‘fell to the ground like a cockroach, it was like her life was over’. He explained:
“I was just observing it like ‘what is it like to want something that bad?’ I’d never felt that before.”
He continued:
“It made me want to move out to LA. I still didn’t know about acting at that point… I wanted to be around people who were like I’m going to die if I don’t get this thing.”
Ritchson has since stated that if he ever meets Paula Abdul again, he would ‘thank her for the crack in the door’—a testament to how a single audition reshaped his trajectory from model to leading man.
