Indonesia’s political tensions are heating up following the simultaneous inauguration of hundreds of regional leaders—including governors, regents, and mayors—by President Prabowo Subianto.
The tension escalated after the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), the largest party in the national parliament, issued an official directive instructing its members to boycott the leadership retreat in Magelang, East Java.
The leadership retreat, an initiative launched by President Prabowo Subianto, serves as an introductory orientation for newly elected regional leaders, providing them with various essential materials and training sessions.
In an official letter numbered 7294/IN/DPP/II/2025, signed by PDI-P Chairperson Megawati, the party cited allegations of criminalization against its Secretary-General, Hasto Kristiyanto, as the primary reason behind the boycott.
For context, PDI-P secured 126 regional leadership positions across Indonesia, spanning gubernatorial, regency, and mayoral levels.
