Daytime television still bears the mark of The Wendy Williams Show years after its conclusion, according to Norman Baker, a former producer on the program who later joined Sherri. In a recent interview, Baker reflected on Williams’ singular impact and why the void she left remains unfilled.
A Voice That Defined an Era
Speaking on the Thursday, September 10 episode of Awf the Record, Baker emphasized that Williams’ approach to daytime talk was unprecedented.
“I feel like no one’s been able to fill the void that she created,” Baker said during his appearance on the Thursday, September 10, episode of Awf the Record. “I feel like she was so irreverent and she spoke her mind and like nobody really is allowed to do that, especially a Black woman. Being allowed to do that on daytime television is a big deal and I feel like nobody really does that anymore, you know?”
For 13 seasons, Williams built a reputation on quick wit and unfiltered commentary, regularly competing with The Ellen DeGeneres Show for the top spot in syndicated talk ratings. Clips from the series continue to circulate widely on social media platforms, giving the show what Baker described as “a whole other life now.”
Realizing the Historical Weight in Retrospect
Baker noted that the cultural significance of the production wasn’t fully apparent during its run.
“When you’re doing it, you don’t really realize the gravity of what you’re doing,” he explained. “And when the show ended, people are still coming up to me and talking about things that they see on TikTok…But when we were doing it, I never really realized what we were doing and we were kind of making history, I guess.”
He added a final thought on the show’s legacy:
“I just want people to continue to celebrate that crazy show because we had no idea that we were making something good.”
From Launch to Transition
Williams launched her self-titled talk show in July 2008. In 2021, she was forced to take an indefinite leave of absence due to medical issues. Sherri Shepherd was subsequently tapped as her replacement, taking over the time slot with her own program.
