Some modern games are at their best when they avoid superficial mechanics, overly complex stories and sprawling progression systems. Turok: Origins appears to embrace that philosophy, delivering a straightforward single-player and co-op shooter built around dinosaurs, aliens and oversized weapons.

A recent gamescom demo offered a look at the game through a single-player mission, although the full campaign supports up to three players — a first for the Turok series. Acting as a soft reset, Turok: Origins takes place long before the events of the original game and shifts the series from 1990s dinosaur hunting toward a fast-paced, futuristic arcade shooter.

Three Turok classes with distinct playstyles

Before starting a mission, players choose between three classes: Cougar, Bison and Raven. Each archetype has its own weapons and abilities, creating different approaches to combat.

Cougar focuses on speed and mobility, with a loadout suited to close-quarters combat. Bison offers a more defensive, tank-like playstyle, with the ability to deploy large shields, absorb damage and protect teammates. Raven favors long-range combat and uses an exceptionally satisfying bow as its primary weapon.

Even when playing alone, the potential for co-op synergy is immediately apparent. Players can combine abilities to slow enemies, create barriers and use strategic positioning to defeat large groups of enemies and powerful prehistoric bosses.

A fast-paced dinosaur shooter built for co-op

The demo quickly moves players through a portal and into a vibrant, atmospheric jungle. The environment evokes classic dinosaur media while retaining the visual DNA of earlier Turok games.

Mission objectives are concise and clearly sequenced: eliminate a group of enemies, destroy hostile technology and advance toward the boss encounter. This structure keeps the focus on combat while providing enough context to make each objective feel purposeful. The complete story campaign is expected to provide considerably more narrative direction.

The focused mission also suggests that Turok: Origins could work equally well in short bursts and longer play sessions. Its co-op campaign supports drop-in, drop-out multiplayer, allowing friends to join or leave without forcing players to navigate menus or restart the mission.

That structure gives the game an old-school arcade quality. Players choose a character and loadout, then get straight into the action. The core experience is built around direct, satisfying shooting, with the full campaign set to expand on that foundation.

“Metal Maw” delivers a large-scale boss battle

The mission culminates in a boss fight against “Metal Maw”, a massive theropod equipped with missile launchers. Defeating it requires patience and movement as players race around the arena to collect ammunition and health pickups while the predator alternates between charging attacks and long-range rocket fire.

The encounter captures the potential of Turok: Origins: tight gunplay, accessible co-op and cinematic battles against enormous prehistoric alien creatures. If the full release maintains that intensity, the game could offer a compelling evolution of the classic Turok formula.

Turok: Origins is coming to Xbox Series X|S. The game features solo and co-op play, a range of weapons and abilities, and a campaign spanning jungles, ancient temples, wasteland canyons and other dangerous worlds.

Players will face dinosaurs, alien creatures and bosses across the Lost Lands while extracting DNA from fallen enemies and the environment to unlock powers that evolve their suits and improve their combat abilities. The arsenal includes plasma rifles, ray guns, sniper weapons, bows and shotguns.
