NBA Raises 2027-28 Salary Cap Projection to $176 Million, Easing Apron Pressure

The NBA has increased its salary-cap projection for the 2027-28 season by $2 million, signaling a reversal in a recent trend of downward revisions and offering teams and players a measure of financial relief. League sources informed The Athletic that the new projection sets the salary cap at $176 million and the luxury tax line at $213 million.

Sources spoke on condition of anonymity because the projections have not been made public.

Shift in Trajectory After Years of Lower Estimates

The adjustment is notable for its direction as much as its magnitude. Every previous cap update from the league had shifted future estimates lower, complicating long-term roster planning for franchises navigating the first and second aprons. The latest figures project a 6.7 percent annual increase for 2027-28, up from the previously forecast 5.5 percent and the 5.2 percent rise seen a year ago.

When the current national television contracts were negotiated, the expectation was for consistent 10 percent annual cap growth — sufficient to cover the standard 8 percent raises built into most star player contracts. A crash in the local television market disrupted that trajectory, creating a widening gap between cap growth and contractual salary escalation.

Implications for Teams and Star Players

The higher projection eases the squeeze for front offices managing apron constraints in future seasons. It also directly benefits players whose maximum contract extensions are tethered to the 2027-28 cap number.

Among the most prominent names affected are Victor Wembanyama and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, both eligible for supermax extensions tied to that season’s cap. Additionally, the increase raises the maximum salary for potential 2027 free agents, a group that includes Nikola Jokić and Jalen Duren.

While the 6.7 percent projected growth remains well below the once-anticipated 10 percent benchmark, the upward revision marks the first positive momentum in cap forecasting since the new media rights landscape took shape.
