Marvelous Unveils Eternal Anima for Nintendo Switch 2
Tokyo-based developer and publisher Marvelous has announced Eternal Anima, a new role-playing game featuring a visual style reminiscent of Square Enix’s acclaimed HD-2D aesthetic. The title is scheduled to launch exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 on March 4, 2027.
A World Submerged in Ocean
According to the reveal trailer’s narration, Eternal Anima takes place in a world almost entirely covered by ocean. Humanity has abandoned its aspirations and wisdom, clustering in the lone remaining city of Urbis Ale. A single, oppressive rule governs the populace: you must never strive for a better tomorrow.
The protagonist, Wade, defies this mandate. Utilizing a mysterious power to relive memories of the past, he discovers a world beyond the city’s boundaries. Branded a heretic for his transgression, Wade presses forward regardless.
Inheriting Memories, Mastering Combat
The trailer showcases a turn-based combat system augmented by a unique foresight mechanic. The game’s narrator delivers the following exposition:
“By inheriting the memories of the world, you acquire the abilities of heroes past,” the trailer’s narrator says. “Peer into the future of [the game’s turn-based] combat to sense and predict enemy actions, then disrupt their next move to take fate into your own hands. As you seek the hidden truths of the world, your adventure will extend back in time. Can you save the past and free the present?”
This “memory inheritance” system appears central to both character progression and the narrative’s time-bending structure, allowing players to access abilities from historical heroes while manipulating combat outcomes through prediction.
Release Details Confirmed
Eternal Anima hits Nintendo Switch 2 on March 4, 2027. Marvelous has not yet announced plans for other platforms.
