Apple Announces iOS 27 Release Date and Key Features
Apple has confirmed that iOS 27 will launch publicly on Monday, September 14, following its announcement during last week’s iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo event. The update will roll out around 10 a.m. Pacific Time / 1 p.m. Eastern Time via Settings → General → Software Update.
Compatibility and Apple Intelligence Requirements
iOS 27 supports the iPhone 11 series and newer, including the latest iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Duo models. However, Siri AI and other Apple Intelligence features require an iPhone 15 Pro or later.
Major Feature: Siri AI
The headline addition is Siri AI, a significantly more intelligent and personalized assistant powered by Apple Intelligence. Unlike the classic Siri, which handles basic tasks like timers and weather, Siri AI functions similarly to ChatGPT — answering complex queries, drawing on personal on-device data, maintaining on-screen awareness, and executing actions across supported apps.
Users can access Siri AI through a new dedicated app or by pressing and holding the side button. Apple notes that Siri AI launches in English only, with daily usage limits and expanded access planned as a paid tier in the future. Additionally, Siri AI will not be available in the EU on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, or watchOS 27 due to ongoing regulatory discussions with the European Commission.
Additional Apple Intelligence Features
- New “Extend” and “Reframe” editing tools in Photos
- Photorealistic image generation in Image Playground
- Natural-language shortcut creation in Shortcuts
- Generated video descriptions for HomeKit Secure Video cameras
Liquid Glass Design Refinements
Building on the Liquid Glass design introduced in iOS 26, Apple says the interface now features “more uniform refraction and improved contrast” with “sharper and more detailed” app icons. A new slider allows users to adjust the clarity or tint of the Liquid Glass effect.
Performance Improvements
iOS 27 delivers measurable speed gains across the system:
- App launches up to 30% faster
- Photos library loading up to 70% faster
- AirDrop transfers up to 80% faster
Additional performance enhancements are detailed in Apple’s full release notes.
iPhone Handoff
A new iPhone Handoff feature lets users switch between two iPhones sharing the same phone number. Carrier support is required, and fees may apply. T-Mobile (U.S.) and Deutsche Telekom (Germany) will launch first, with T-Mobile charging $5/month. Verizon and EE (UK) plan support by year-end, with more carriers to follow.
Apple Cash Bill Splitting (U.S. Only)
iOS 27 introduces AI-powered bill splitting via Apple Cash, accessible in Apple Wallet, Messages, or the new Siri mode in the Camera app. Apple provided the following description of the feature:
“When users point their iPhone at a receipt using Siri mode, it can surface the relevant action to split a bill with Apple Cash and identify the items on the receipt,” said Apple. “As users select their items, their total payment is calculated, including their share of tax and tip, so they can pay back exactly what they owe with Apple Cash.”
Enhanced Location Sharing in Find My
Find My now supports custom location-sharing durations (e.g., four days and six hours) and exact expiration dates/times. Users can also pause location sharing with specific people until end of day without notification — useful for surprises. Previously, only three preset options existed: indefinitely, until end of day, or one hour.
CarPlay Video Apps
Following its WWDC 2025 preview, CarPlay video playback via AirPlay is now available in compatible new vehicles while parked. At WWDC 2026, Apple confirmed developers can build CarPlay apps with video browsing capabilities, letting passengers watch content directly on the vehicle display — ideal for airport waits or EV charging. Playback is disabled while driving for safety.
