George Clooney Reflects on Sister’s Death During Venice Film Festival Lifetime Achievement Honor
George Clooney opened up about profound personal loss while accepting the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. The actor and filmmaker hosted a Master Class during the festival, where he spoke candidly about his career, family, and the recent death of his older sister, Ada Ziedler, who passed away in December 2023 at age 65 after a brief battle with cancer.

During the talk, Clooney shared the raw experience of being present during his sister’s final moments, describing how the loss reshaped his perspective on time and joy.
“My sister, who I was very close to, got cancer last year and she died very quickly,” he said. “She died very quickly, and I was with her when she died. And there was this feeling, being with her, holding her hand when she died, understanding how brief all of this is.”
“It was minutes ago that she and I were little kids together; Minutes ago we were holding hands as little kids,” he added. “Time goes fast. All of this. And so we have to find nothing but joy.”
A Private Life Remembered Publicly
Ziedler, known as Adelia to family, led a largely private life away from her brother’s spotlight. She attended Clooney’s 2014 wedding to Amal Clooney in Venice, captured in photographs alongside the couple. Her obituary highlighted a life dedicated to art and education.
“A talented artist, she shared her skills as an elementary art teacher at Augusta Independent School for several years,” the obituary reads. It also noted her academic distinction as a National Merit Scholar in high school, her participation in a local book club, membership in the Augusta Art Guild, and her role as a past grand marshal of Augusta’s Annual White Christmas Parade.

Clooney first confirmed his sister’s death in a statement to PEOPLE last year, offering a glimpse into their bond and her character.
“My sister, Ada, was my hero,” he said in a statement to PEOPLE. “She faced down cancer with courage and humor. I’ve never met anyone so brave. Amal and I will miss her terribly.”

Adelia was one year older than George. The siblings were born to journalist Nick Clooney and former beauty queen and entrepreneur Nina Bruce Warren.
