Texas Republican Representative Brandon Gill delivered a viral moment at the Republican midterm convention on Wednesday, offering a patriotic reimagining of the traditional land acknowledgment that drew a roaring response from the audience.

Opening his remarks at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Rep. Gill appropriated the rhetorical device frequently used by Democratic officials to instead celebrate American history.
“I’d like to acknowledge that we stand here today in the great state of Texas and the United States of America is the ancestral homeland of great American patriots, pioneers and explorers who put down roots, fight for freedom all over the globe and bled and died to build the greatest civilization ever known to man,”
Gill said, prompting loud applause from the Republican crowd.
Pushing Back Against ‘Stolen Land’ Narrative
Speaking to Fox News Digital after his speech, the freshman lawmaker explained the stunt was a direct response to how Democrats frame the nation’s founding.
“Listen, you see Democrats all the time wanting to begin their conventions or their gatherings by acknowledging, making some bizarre land acknowledgment that we live on stolen land, and they essentially just want to apologize for our country,”
Gill said.
“I think most Americans believe, rightfully so, that we live in the greatest country that’s ever existed, and I’m not going to apologize for it…certainly most Americans don’t want their elected officials apologizing for it either.”
Convention Contrast Highlights Partisan Divide
The moment underscored a sharp cultural contrast between the parties. Days earlier, an official with the Michigan Democratic Party faced widespread ridicule online after stumbling over tribal names during a land acknowledgment at their state convention. Similarly, Texas Democrats performed land acknowledgments during their nominating convention in Corpus Christi.
Gill, often described as a freshman firebrand, has previously garnered national attention for his sharp critiques of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies, labeling them “utterly intellectually indefensible.” His latest appearance at the 2026 Republican National Convention solidifies his role as a leading voice in the GOP’s messaging war over American identity and history.
