The Detroit Pistons remain in negotiations with restricted free-agent center Jalen Duren, but contract talks are reportedly facing a prolonged stalemate. If the impasse continues, Detroit could explore trading the young star.
Because Duren is an All-NBA-level talent with a significant age advantage, the Pistons would likely demand a high-impact player in return. One hypothetical four-team trade involving the Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets would send Joel Embiid to Detroit.

Embiid is not a frequent subject of trade speculation for understandable reasons. Although he has dealt with recurring injuries and has experienced periods of dissatisfaction, he has never left Philadelphia.
Why Detroit Would Consider Joel Embiid
To acquire Embiid, the Pistons would need to do more than trade Duren. Detroit would send Duren’s potential new contract to Philadelphia while also absorbing Embiid’s substantial salary.
Embiid is entering a three-year extension that would pay him approximately $57.9 million in the 2026-27 season, with his salary increasing to as much as $67 million in the final year. Taking on that contract would be difficult regardless of Detroit’s available flexibility.
Under the proposal, the Pistons would move four players, including the significant contracts of Duren and Robinson. The two primary pieces would join the 76ers, while the smaller contracts of Harris and Prince would be routed to Los Angeles and Houston, respectively.
Detroit would remain hard-capped at the first apron after the trade. The Pistons could not move more than four players in the transaction because the proposed deal would leave them with only 11 standard roster spots.
The trade would effectively exchange the franchises’ starting centers. Duren would join Philadelphia alongside Robinson, giving the 76ers a much younger center and a reliable shooting option. Embiid would move to Detroit as the Pistons pursue an immediate upgrade.
Would an Embiid Trade Make Sense for the Pistons?
Embiid, 32, remains one of the NBA’s premier centers when healthy. He played 38 games last season, twice as many as the previous season.
Whether Detroit should surrender four pieces, including Duren and Robinson, along with a future first-round pick for Embiid would be debatable. The veteran center’s health is a major variable, but he is a former MVP and remains a dominant contributor when available. Those credentials would ordinarily justify a trade of this magnitude.
Embiid has never played 70 games in a season, and there is little reason to expect that pattern to change. The proposed deal would give the Pistons a short-term veteran star capable of accelerating their push toward contention.
Philadelphia could also be exploring a win-now roster by pursuing LeBron James in free agency. The 76ers would likely prefer to keep Embiid for that scenario, but the opportunity to acquire a much younger proven All-NBA player could still be appealing.
