Needham High School Junior Elijah Chen Dies Suddenly; Community Mourns
The Needham, Massachusetts, community is grieving following the sudden death of Needham High School junior Elijah Chen on Monday, according to Superintendent Dan Gutekanst. The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
Student Remembered for Athletic Involvement and Family Ties
Elijah had many friends on the football and track teams, as well as two younger siblings attending High Rock School and Pollard Middle School, the superintendent added.
Crisis Support Deployed for Students and Staff
Students in Elijah’s classes are being supported by the high school administration and staff. The Needham Police Department also brought their emotional support dogs, Rocket and Ghost, to visit with students throughout the day. Guidance and other counseling services will continue to be offered as necessary.
Superintendent Issues Statement to Families
“News like this is difficult to share, especially when it involves a young person,” Gutekanst wrote in a statement to Needham families. “Please join me in offering prayers and support to Elijah’s family.”
Gutekanst also encouraged parents to consider several resources as a way to talk about this tragic news with their child if they are curious or concerned.
