Actor Christian Bale has been compared to his iconic character Bruce Wayne after opening Together California, a pioneering foster care village designed to keep siblings together in the foster system. The 52-year-old actor attended the opening ceremony over the weekend alongside his wife, Sibi Blažić, who co-founded the initiative.
First-of-Its-Kind Foster Care Village Opens in California
The 11,000-square-foot community represents a transformative approach to foster care. Organizers emphasize that keeping siblings together is not currently guaranteed in the system, making this village a critical innovation. The facility comprises 12 fully furnished units, including two studio apartments designated for young adults aging out of foster care.
“With our Together California model, [the village] is something absolutely new, totally transformative and something completely needed. Imagine the absolute pain and the trauma of losing your parents or being torn from your parents, and then losing your brothers and sisters on top of that, that’s no way to treat kids.
And so, we will be the hub for that. I hope that this village will be the first of many, and I hope that people, Californians and Angelenos, know to come join us in opening our eyes to what’s happening right under our noses. These are our children, and we must help our children.”
Community-Focused Mission
Together California Executive Director Tim McCormick described the village’s core philosophy:
“A place where everyone is welcomed, a place that keeps families together, a place that creates community, a place where you can find hope in the most challenging of times.”
Personal Inspiration Behind the Project
Though Bale has no personal experience with the foster care system, he credits the birth of his children as the catalyst for his advocacy. In a 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he explained:
“After our daughter had been born, I found myself trying to imagine what it would be like if we weren’t around.
At the same time, I was doing all-night searches for what was going on in L.A. proper and where we could help. I was stunned and mad to learn that we have more foster kids here than anywhere else in the country. I was also kicking myself for not knowing that before so I thought, ‘Well, this is it. Let’s focus on this.'”
Decade-Long Effort Funded by Donations
The project has been more than ten years in the making and was entirely funded through philanthropic contributions. The Austrian American Council West raised nearly $9 million, while Bale and his wife reportedly donated $22 million, according to News Nation. Fellow actor Leonardo DiCaprio also reportedly contributed to the initiative.
Life Imitates Art
The project draws an unintentional parallel to Bale’s portrayal of Bruce Wayne in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. In the films, Wayne establishes an orphanage—a detail Bale only recognized years after beginning his foster care advocacy.
“It wasn’t until a couple years after I started doing this that I realised that Bruce Wayne started an orphanage at the end of the movies.
And I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought of it before, but it wasn’t until I started seeing it online that people were saying that.”
Children Expected to Arrive Next Month
With the facility now officially open, children are slated to begin moving into Together California next month. Speaking to ABC at the opening ceremony, Bale summarized the village’s mission:
“It’s our job to turn their heartbreak and their pain into love and hope and a sense of future.”
