Gervonta Davis has signaled his willingness to grant Ryan Garcia a rematch, but only under specific conditions that favor the former multi-weight world champion. Davis handed Garcia the first professional loss of his career in April 2023, stopping “King Ry” with a devastating body shot in the seventh round of their lucrative showdown.
Weight Dispute Remains Central to Rematch Talks
That victory came with significant caveats. Garcia agreed to a 136-pound catchweight with a 10-pound rehydration clause to finalize the bout, despite already struggling to make the 140-pound super lightweight limit. Garcia has consistently maintained that the severe weight cut compromised his performance and has publicly campaigned for a second fight on fair terms.
“I pray I get my rematch with Tank one day. I need that one back on even grounds, I need that!!!” Garcia wrote on X, formerly Twitter, in April.
Davis Sets 140-Pound Limit for Potential Sequel
The landscape shifted following Garcia’s explosive knockout victory over Conor Benn in under two rounds on Saturday night. The win positioned Garcia for several high-profile opportunities at welterweight, including a potential unification clash with Teofimo Lopez. However, a rematch with Davis remains a compelling commercial prospect if both sides can agree on a weight class.
Garcia now campaigns at 147 pounds, while Davis is a natural lightweight who has competed as high as super lightweight. Davis has proposed meeting in the middle at 140 pounds.
“I would go to 140[lbs], but not 147[lbs] for him,” Davis said of a possible rematch on Instagram.
Uncertainty Surrounds Davis’ Return Timeline
Whether Garcia would consider dropping back down to 140 pounds remains questionable. Adding further complexity, Davis has been sidelined since a controversial draw with Lamont Roach in March of last year. A scheduled rematch with Roach was abandoned when Davis signed a lucrative deal to face YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. That crossover bout subsequently collapsed after a civil lawsuit alleging domestic abuse was filed by Davis’ ex-partner.
The legal proceedings have kept Davis out of the ring, resulting in his designation as WBA lightweight champion in recess. Floyd Schofield Jr. and Lucas Bahdi are scheduled to contest the vacant title on October 10.
