The UFC is set to evaluate Tom Aspinall’s position as heavyweight champion as the British fighter nears a full year away from competition, according to promotion president Dana White.
Aspinall’s Extended Absence Following Eye Injury
Aspinall, 33, has not entered the octagon since October 2025. His first title defense against Ciryl Gane ended in a no-contest after Aspinall suffered a significant eye injury. Repeated eye pokes from Gane left Aspinall unable to continue, and he was subsequently diagnosed with a rare eye condition that caused persistent double vision, ultimately requiring surgery.
Parallels to Shevchenko’s Title Vacancy
The situation draws comparisons to a recent development in the women’s flyweight division. Earlier this month, champion Valentina Shevchenko voluntarily vacated her title due to persistent injuries. When asked whether Aspinall should consider a similar move—or if the UFC had discussed stripping him of the belt—White confirmed the topic is on the agenda.
“We’ll definitely be talking about that,” White said.
“Valentina doesn’t want to tie up the division and I’m assuming Tom feels the same way.”
“I don’t know personally where he is health-wise. We should clear that up soon.”
Rematch Expectations and Interim Title Picture
In June, Aspinall indicated he had returned to full training and targeted a September rematch with France’s Gane. He later dismissed reports suggesting he might leave the UFC, which surfaced in late August.
Meanwhile, Gane captured the interim heavyweight title by defeating Alex Pereira at the UFC’s White House event in June. The French contender has also publicly called for a second fight with Aspinall, setting the stage for a unification bout once the champion’s medical status is resolved.
