England prop Hannah Botterman and Wales forward Sisilia Evans find themselves on opposing sides for club and country, yet the engaged couple describe their relationship as the perfect team dynamic. Evans, who watched Botterman return from injury in England’s victory over Australia at Salford, spoke candidly about the unique balance of rivalry and support that defines their partnership.
Supporting a Champion on a Historic Streak
Botterman is part of an England side riding a 39-Test winning streak, a run of dominance that Evans admits triggers mixed emotions.
“Obviously it makes me a little bit jealous at times, but she’s also been through the troubles of injury and rehab,”
Evans said. She emphasized that witnessing the rehabilitation process firsthand deepens her appreciation for Botterman’s success.
“To have that connection is pretty special and unique. The fact that we’re not in each other’s pockets, but doing the same type of thing every day, also really helps.”
Evans added, summarizing the foundation of their bond.
“I’m incredibly proud of her and I hope she’s proud of me.”
A Surprise Engagement and Wedding Plans
The couple’s engagement caught Evans off guard, leaving her in a surreal state.
“I was in a bit of a bubble. It felt like a fever dream where you just don’t know what’s going on, and then I came back for pre-season and it all hits you pretty hard.”
While wedding planning is in its early stages, the bridal party is already taking shape. Fellow Wales forward Alisha Joyce and Wales centre Meg Webb have been enlisted as bridesmaids. Evans joked that she has handed over control of the hen do to the pair.
“I’ve allowed them to run with my hen do, so God knows if I’ll come back alive,”
she laughed.
