Martha Stewart revealed details about her final interactions with John F. Kennedy Jr., stating he was “in trouble” during a phone conversation shortly before his fatal 1999 plane crash.
According to Stewart, the two spoke by telephone and subsequently dined together in the days leading up to the tragic accident that claimed the lives of Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, and her sister Lauren Bessette on July 16, 1999.
The lifestyle mogul’s remarks offer a rare glimpse into the personal state of Kennedy Jr. during his final days. The plane crash occurred off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, when the Piper Saratoga aircraft Kennedy was piloting crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.
Stewart, who moved in similar social circles as the Kennedy family, did not elaborate on the specific nature of the trouble Kennedy referenced during their conversation. The National Transportation Safety Board ultimately determined the probable cause of the crash was spatial disorientation brought on by hazy weather conditions and Kennedy’s limited experience with instrument-only flying.
