BitcoinIRA, the platform that pioneered cryptocurrency retirement investing, announced on September 1 the launch of Freedom Accounts, individual taxable crypto investment accounts that allow clients to invest in digital assets outside the contribution and withdrawal rules governing IRAs.
Announced in a company release, the new product expands BitcoinIRA beyond retirement investing for the first time. Eligible clients can manage taxable and retirement crypto holdings through a single dashboard and consolidate supported cryptocurrency they already own.
Taxable Crypto Investing Without IRA Restrictions
Unlike retirement accounts, BitcoinIRA Freedom Accounts have no annual IRA contribution limits, required minimum distributions or retirement-age withdrawal restrictions. Clients can fund the accounts with cash or transfer supported digital assets directly from external platforms and wallets.
The accounts are available alongside staking for eligible assets and Crypto Bundles, BitcoinIRA’s diversified crypto portfolios. The launch gives the company’s more than 200,000 customers a taxable alternative to the self-directed IRAs it has offered since 2016, when BitcoinIRA became the first firm to let Americans hold Bitcoin in a self-directed IRA.
In-Kind Crypto Transfers Can Help Investors Avoid Forced Sales
A key feature of Freedom Accounts is the ability to make in-kind transfers. Users can move supported cryptocurrency from exchanges such as Coinbase, Kraken and Robinhood into a Freedom Account without selling the assets first, transferring cash and then repurchasing them.
This can help investors consolidate their holdings without triggering a taxable sale or losing exposure during a market move. BitcoinIRA supports more than 100 cryptocurrencies, offers 24/7 trading and provides institutional-grade custody through Digital Trust and BitGo.
BitcoinIRA Expands Beyond Retirement Accounts
“BitcoinIRA pioneered crypto retirement investing, but our clients’ financial lives don’t stop at their IRA,” said Chris Kline, Co-Founder of BitcoinIRA, in the announcement. “Freedom Accounts are the next step in expanding our platform.”
The launch follows a broader effort to bring retirement capital into digital assets, a trend tracked by BlockchainReporter, as well as Washington’s efforts to open 401(k) plans to cryptocurrency.
One Dashboard for Retirement and Taxable Crypto Investing
Freedom Accounts are designed to complement BitcoinIRA retirement accounts rather than replace them. Crypto IRAs provide the tax advantages associated with qualified retirement accounts, while the new taxable accounts offer greater flexibility for everyday digital-asset investing.
Eligible clients can manage both account types through one dashboard. BitcoinIRA Freedom Accounts are available now and are automatically included with eligible BitcoinIRA accounts.
