A TikTok video from creator @meitham is going viral after she shared the strict household rules she follows, prompting debate over parental supervision, privacy and control. The video, captioned ‘Can’t forget curfew,’ has received more than 29,300 likes and over 200 comments.

In the video, Mei describes rules covering electronics, phone calls, social plans and her whereabouts. She said she must charge her electronic devices outside her bedroom every night. By about 11 p.m., her laptop, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods and phone must be left in the kitchen or another location outside her room.

Although Mei said some of the restrictions were introduced because of her past behavior, she said they continue to affect her daily life.

Mei says her parents monitor calls, outings and location

Mei also described a rule preventing her from FaceTiming friends. She said her parents become upset when she spends time texting or talking to friends at home because they believe being at home should mean spending time with family or studying.

Her parents also require detailed information about every outing, including who will be there, when it will begin and when it will end. Mei said she must tell them in advance about any changes to those plans.

She said her parents require her to carry an AirTag in her bag and keep location sharing enabled on her phone. They also monitor her transactions and question her about purchases they do not remember approving.

According to Mei, the restrictions have caused her to hide things from her parents. She said she now considers herself an ‘avid liar’ because she has learned to conceal information to avoid being reprimanded.

Mei said she performs well in school and focuses on her studies, although she sometimes skips class to spend time with friends. She added that she does not party often or use drugs.

Viewers debate whether the rules are strict or lenient

Viewers offered different interpretations of Mei’s household rules in the comments, with several saying they could relate to her experiences. One commenter called the rules ‘normal,’ while another asked, “why do we lowkey have the same parents?” Some TikTok users also said they were familiar with being prevented from calling friends.

Other commenters described the rules as relatively lenient. One called them “basic rules in my house”, while another wrote, “this is light.” A third commenter said they were from a Muslim household and that their family had followed similar rules since childhood.

The Daily Dot was unable to independently verify the details shared in the video or the circumstances described by Mei. The information is based solely on Mei’s account of her experiences, shared on TikTok under @meitham.
