The Iowa Nepalese Association held a candlelight vigil at Centennial Park in Waukee on Sunday night to honor victims of the devastating floods in Nepal.
Most Nepalese families in Iowa live in the Des Moines metropolitan area, according to the association. Organizers said the vigil offered a way for the community to stand in solidarity with people affected by the disaster.
“Iowa may seem very far, but as you can see, like there are a lot of Nepalese population here, so it’s close to this disaster that happened,” said Aabriti Pandey, public relations director of the Iowa Nepalese Association.
“They have a huge community, and we don’t even know if someone’s family or friends is affected by the flood,” said Pradip Sthapit, president of the association.
Donations for Nepal flood victims
The Iowa Nepalese Association is collecting donations for people in need through Sept. 15. The funds will be sent to Nepal’s Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund.
