A popular travel vlogger’s TikTok video about American tipping culture has sparked widespread debate after he shared a hotel room-service bill that included both a delivery fee and a separate tip.
@ken_abroad documented the experience during a visit to Boston, United States. The video received more than 887,000 views on his verified TikTok account, where he explained why the charges left him confused.
Hotel Room-Service Bill Includes Delivery Fee and Tip
The vlogger said he regularly orders room service while traveling but had not encountered a hotel delivery fee in years. His bill included a $6 room-service fee as well as a 20% tip worth an additional $13.
He pointed out that the server would receive $13 on top of minimum wage, bringing the combined amount to $19. The bill also stated that the room-service fee was a separate charge rather than a tip.
That raised a question for the travel vlogger: If the fee was not intended for the person delivering the food, who or what was it for? He also questioned why the money was not going directly to the delivery person or server.

Some users told him he should not feel obligated to tip, writing, “Stop feeling pressured to tip. Just don’t do it.”
Another commenter criticized the broader tipping system, saying, “It’s ridiculous that you’re expected to pay people’s wages for your food…It should fall to the employer to pay the employees.”
Some commenters described the charge as a scam, while others said they would have picked up the food themselves.
