The scar above Calvin Throckmorton’s nose will not have formed in vain. Vanity is rarely a priority for an offensive lineman, but this mark carries a story from one of the Denver Broncos’ biggest training camp confrontations.
Throckmorton was without his helmet at the bottom of a pile during the altercation a couple of weeks ago. Asked about the scar Friday after Denver’s preseason finale, the veteran offensive lineman and fringe roster candidate smiled.
“A little reminder of this training camp and hopefully what it’s going to lead to down the road,” Throckmorton told The Post.
Throckmorton will remain with the Broncos despite being released Sunday. He was one of four known veterans to re-sign with Denver’s practice squad Monday.
NFL teams can carry as many as 17 players on their practice squad, provided one player qualifies for an international exemption. Of the remaining 16 spots, up to six can be occupied by vested veterans.
Denver lost fifth-round tight end Justin Joly and reserve nickel cornerback and special teams standout Reese Taylor to the Miami Dolphins on the waiver wire.
George Paton expected Justin Joly to be claimed
Broncos general manager George Paton sounded prepared to lose Joly after Denver waived him Sunday.
“Justin is a talented player,” Paton said. “We knew it when we drafted him. We knew he was raw. We still like the player. He was coming on towards the end of training camp. Tight end position is a tough position for a rookie. He missed a lot of the offseason — just a little bit behind. We wish we had another game or two. We still like the player.
“We think he’s going to have a nice career. You just have to make tough decisions to build the best 53 you can make.”
Denver’s other two Day 3 draft picks waived Sunday cleared waivers and returned to the team: safety Miles Scott and linebacker Red Murdock.
Scott told The Post after Friday’s preseason game that he believed he had made steady progress throughout training camp.
“It’s definitely a gradual thing,” he said. “I feel like this past week was my best week of practice. I was like, man, this is how it should be. I’ve got to develop and become a better player. I’ve only played safety for a few years.
“In college, the defense was pretty simple. Here, this defense is definitely more complex. That’s why it works, though.”
Scott will continue developing on Denver’s practice squad.
