Pokémon is returning to the big screen with “Pokémon: Wild Card,” a new animated film scheduled for worldwide release in 2027.
The movie was announced during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco. A short teaser introduced the film’s central characters: a trading card game player and the ghostly Pokémon Mimikyu.
What the Pokémon: Wild Card teaser reveals
The mysterious teaser shows the trading card game player wearing a yellow hoodie resembling Mimikyu. The Ghost- and Fairy-type Pokémon first appeared in “Sun” and “Moon,” the seventh-generation games in the “Pokémon” franchise.
Mimikyu crudely disguises itself as Pikachu, the mascot of the “Pokémon” series. Its true form remains hidden beneath the yellow rag it wears.
Pokémon: Wild Card creative team
Katsuhiko Kitada will direct “Pokémon: Wild Card.” Kitada previously worked on anime films and series including “The First Slam Dunk,” “Attack on Titan” and “Naruto: Shippuden.”
Akemi Hayashi is overseeing character design. Her previous credits include “Banana Fish” and “Lazarus.” CloverWorks, the Japanese animation studio behind “Spy X Family,” “Bocchi the Rock” and other anime titles, will produce the movie.
Pokémon movie release history
“Wild Card” is the first “Pokémon” movie since 2020’s “Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle.” That film was released theatrically in Japan and worldwide on Netflix in 2021.
The most recent “Pokémon” movie to receive a worldwide theatrical release was 2018’s “Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us,” which had a limited release outside Japan through Fathom Events.
The franchise will also expand next year with “Winds” and “Waves,” the 10th generation of “Pokémon” titles. Pokémon celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2026.
