Tottenham manager Roberto de Zerbi said he was “not angry” and there was “no panic” after a second defeat in two Premier League matches left Spurs bottom of the table. However, the 2-0 loss to Newcastle continued a deeply familiar pattern for the club’s supporters.
Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa scored during a 10-minute spell in the second half to secure Newcastle’s victory, while thousands of Tottenham fans left the stadium before the final whistle.
The frustration is understandable. Tottenham have now recorded only three home league wins in their past 23 matches at their stadium.
Tottenham’s difficult Premier League start
Spurs finished 17th in the Premier League in 2024-25 and again in 2025-26, avoiding relegation only on the final day. This season was expected to mark a change in fortunes.
After spending more than £300m during the summer, Tottenham supporters were hoping for a challenge to return to European competition. The club won the Europa League two seasons ago and reached the Champions League last 16 in March.
Instead, Tottenham have played two Premier League matches, lost both, scored no goals and sit 20th out of 20 teams.
“We can improve in the defensive phases but today was an unfair result,” said De Zerbi.
“Disappointed for the result because until the first goal we conceded, we played better than Newcastle.”
“We are disappointed for the result and [for] our fans. We are working to be a great team. When we become a team, we can change the story of the last two seasons for Tottenham.”
