Impressive Mansfield Town ended Luton’s unbeaten start to the season with a comprehensive 5-2 victory.
Nathan Moriah-Welsh scored twice and Louis Reed added another goal as Mansfield took firm control before half-time. Any hopes of a Luton comeback disappeared when Jon Russell scored twice before the hour mark.
Nahki Wells scored two late consolation goals for Luton, but Mansfield had already secured a decisive advantage.
Mansfield dominate first half
Mansfield made a strong start when Moriah-Welsh converted Russell’s knockdown in the 17th minute. The winger doubled the hosts’ lead 11 minutes later with a thunderous effort from just inside the penalty area.
Reed extended Mansfield’s advantage on the stroke of half-time, firing a first-time shot from Moriah-Welsh’s cross.
Russell completes Mansfield rout
Russell made it 4-0 two minutes into the second half with a simple finish after Luton failed to clear their lines.
The Jamaican completed his brace in the 56th minute, picking out the top corner after meeting Michael Smith’s header.
Wells scored a consolation penalty with 13 minutes remaining before adding a second goal from distance in stoppage time, but it was too little, too late for Luton.
