Marte allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out three over 4.2 innings in his major-league debut, earning a no-decision against the Diamondbacks in Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader.
He threw 48 of 76 pitches for strikes and fell one out short of pitching the required innings for a win. Despite that, Marte’s debut was encouraging and could give him a chance to remain in the Giants’ rotation for the rest of the season.
San Francisco entered the doubleheader with two rotation openings because of recent pitching injuries. However, the 22-year-old has already logged 112.1 innings this season, up from 102 innings last year, so the Giants may impose a modest workload restriction if he stays in the majors.
