There are not enough psychotherapists in Russia

There is a shortage of psychotherapists in Russian state medical institutions, said Svetlana Shport, director general of the National Research Center for Psychiatry and Narcology named after the Serbian Ministry of Health of Russia.

According to her, this situation has arisen because the majority of specialists prefer to work in the private rather than in the public sector. “If we look at the statistics, there are very few psychotherapists in our country. There are about 1250 of them, and the indicator constantly has a negative trend. This does not mean that they are not in the country – they are, but they go to the private sector, ”said Shport (quote by Interfax).

According to official statistics, 3.9 million people applied to public services for mental health care. Of these, 1.4 million are under observation in neuropsychiatric dispensaries, the rest are those who sought such help at least once in their lives, Shport specified.

She noted that the country needs the organization of high-quality psychiatric care at the level of polyclinics. Now she is gone, NMIC “receives patients already in advanced cases”, and “the situation needs to be changed.”

The Ministry of Health also plans to create a federal register of people with severe mental disorders.potentially dangerous to society. According to Shport, there are about 53,000 such people in Russia. Of these, 13,000 are on outpatient-compulsory treatment and are observed in a psycho-neurological dispensary.

Now it is difficult to track down a sick person who moves from one region to another: the patient can change his surname and get lost. The creation of such a register will allow exchanging the necessary information with the police and strengthening control over this category of citizens, Shport explained.
