MANILA, Philippines – The Sandiganbayan on Monday, October 10 sentenced the former mayor of Shariff Saydona Mustapha, Maguindanao, Datu Sajid Islam Ampatuan, to 128 years in prison for multiple counts of graft and malversation.
This is after the anti-graft court of the First Division found Ampatuan guilty beyond reasonable doubt of four counts of graft and four counts of complex crime of malversation for forging documents and revealing that P79-million worth of funds were used government to buy food supplies such as sardines, sugar and fish even though nothing was actually bought.
Aside from imprisonment, Ampatuan is also disqualified for life from running for any office and is also being paid P79-million.
Currently, Ampatuan is still part of the Sangguniang Bayan of the former municipality.
According to its lawyer, Glenn Nuestro, they will file a motion for reconsideration
In December 2019, unlike Sajid’s, his brothers Andal Jr. were acquitted. and Zaldy who is accused of killing 58 people including 32 journalists in the 2009 Maguindanao massacre. RNT/JGC
