MANILA, Philippines – Newly appointed Commission on Elections (Comelec) commissioner Ernesto Ferdinand Maceda Jr. and Nelson Celis joined poll chairperson George Garcia on Monday.
This Thursday when the poll body appointed by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. announced. Maceda and Celis were reappointed as ad interim commissioners.
They will both serve until February 2, 2029.
In his speech, Maceda said he will help address the issues of disposition of cases, cleaning of the voter list, enfranchisement especially of overseas contract workers, campaign finance, regulation of social media, and replacement of candidates , etc.
“We should not be only as good as our latest accomplishments. For sustained reform, what we need is continuous review, capacity building, communications, strategy planning, and we prepare for our next great accomplishment,” said Maceda referring to the “success” of the 2022 national and local elections.
Celis, who is a veteran information technology expert, emphasized the importance of digitization in elections.
Celis said he observed the election transition from 2010, 2016 and 2019 automated elections compared to 2022.
