A bubwit TOLD me that a large-scale environmental conference was successfully held at the Diamond Hotel in Manila last Oct. 5-7, 2022.
It is said to be unique because this is the first time that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources or DENR has brought together captains of industry, well-known environmental groups and academics.
He said that this conference was also somewhat noisy, because President Bongbong Marcos, Jr. himself gave the Key Note Address at the conference, which was attended by over 300 participants.
Real captains of the industry were in attendance – Ramon Ang, Lance Gokongwei, Hans Sy, Federico Lopez, Enrique Razon, Mariana Zobel de Ayala and Paolo Villar. They are great entrepreneurs who can’t deny that their projects have a huge impact on our environment.
It’s funny that Sec. Toni Yulo-Loyzaga this gathering. Fortunately, the DENR is moving hard and in the right direction now. To be honest, the DENR has been clumsy and almost insensitive in recent years, especially when it comes to cleaning up Boracay and the Dolomite beach in Manila Bay.
Super Typhoon “Karding” just finished hitting the country, and we have become aware of the bitter reality of climate change.
Almost everyone who spoke at the DENR conference admitted and committed that they will respond to the challenge of climate change. They said, environmental protection is good for business.
I pray that Loyzada can continue what he started in DENR. There is a real need for a DENR Secretary who has strong scientific support and uses the right evidence in making decisions about nature conservation and the proper use of natural resources.
We need more officials who are truly green-minded.
Before I forget, I want to pay tribute to all indigenous people, in celebration of “Buwan ng Katutubo” . A longer story about this, in my next column.
