Despite being held hostage, De Lima still attended the MRTC hearing

MANILA, Philippines – A day after an escaped prisoner was taken hostage at the PNP Custodial Center yesterday, October 9, former Senator Leila de Lima still attended the continuation of the hearing of the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court for the remaining drug charges against her.

Despite this, Atty said. Filibon Tacardon, De Lima’s legal counsel postponed the hearing after Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos tested positive for COVID-19.

According to Tacardon, De Lima did not undergo COVID-19 testing because she had no symptoms of the disease.

“But that’s just a waste of time for the hearing to continue now. Both sides should be complete. We were just wondering when we got in and then came out,” he said in an interview with reporters.

It is said that the possibility of temporarily sending De Lima home was also not discussed as it can be recalled that the former senator’s defense team said that they were studying it after the hostage-taking incident.

“We will think again about how that will reach him but we will continue to talk about that,” said Tacardon.

“He has an idea that we are doing but he is waiting for our discussions. That’s why it didn’t work because we messed up right from the start,” he added.

When asked about de Lima’s condition, he was doing well.

“Well, he’s okay. What he really complains to us about is that he still has numbness in his chest due to the pressure of the pointed object on him.” RNT/JGC
