CAMARINES SUR- One man died while 48 others were treated after being poisoned by the cassava they ate on Sunday, October 9 in the town of Magarao.
Gilbert Cortezano, 35, resident of Bgy. Carangcang, Magarao, South Camarines.
Others were treated at the hospital after experiencing vomiting and diarrhea.
According to Punong Barangay Nenita Aspe, it was Cortezano’s brother’s birthday party and among the preparations was the potted cassava.
Most of the attendees ate cassava and Cortezano ate more because it was his favorite.
A few hours later, the victims complained of stomach pain, vomiting and dizziness, while Cortezano was in severe pain and had a fever.
Cortezano was immediately taken to the Bicol Medical Center on Tuesday, but he later died.
While the other victim has been released from the hospital after being treated and the others are still recovering.
The Magarao Municipal Health Office reminded the public that cooking cassava or cassava should not be done lightly, the skin should be properly peeled and the person should be cleaned thoroughly so that it does not spoil or spoil.
