PNP Senators slam the hostage-taking incident

MANILA, Philippines – Several lawmakers and ex-Vice President Leni Robredo urged the Philippine National Police to focus on the investigation into the incident that led to the hostage-taking of former Senator Leila de Lima, Sunday morning, October 9.

One of them is Senator Risa Hontiveros who personally visited Camp Crame to visit de Lima and condemned the unjust and barbaric actions of the three suspects.

He also criticized the seemingly quick entry into the former Senator’s cell.

“How can armed detainees easily gain access to the custodial cell of Sen. Leila, which is deep inside the PNP national headquarters? What lapses in security must be addressed, and most of all, who is responsible for these lapses? We strongly deplore this breach of duty,” ani Hontiveros.

“I urge the PNP to increase the security arrangements around former Senator De Lima, and ensure that no similar incident will ever occur against her or other detainees,” dagdag pa niya.

He also stressed the call to release de Lima and withdraw the complaint against him.

“The violence against former Senator De Lima is only the latest act of injustice against her. This would not have happened if from the beginning, Senator Leila had not been imprisoned because of baseless charges. This is political persecution at its worst,” he added.

Meanwhile, Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III also expressed concern for his former colleague, and urged the PNP to submit a detailed report on the incident.

“We worry for the safety of Sen Leila de Lima. PNP should come up with a detailed report on what happened and why this happened considering that Sen de Lima is held in a separate area away from other inmates,” ani Pimentel.

“The wheels of Justice in this country must move quicker,” dagdag pa niya.

Former Vice President Leni Robredo offered a prayer for de Lima’s safety.

“We pray for your safety and eventual release, Sen Leila. Our prayers are also for the safety and speedy recovery of PCpl Roger Agustin,” Robredo said in a tweet.

Before this, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. ordered to the police so that this incident does not happen again.

Earlier, PNP chief Police General Rodolfo Azurin Jr. ordered. to conduct an in-depth investigation for this. RNT/JGC
