MANILA, Philippines – Was there a deliberate attempt on the life of former Senator Leila de Lima?
This is the question of the Akbayan group after de Lima was held hostage for several hours at the Camp Crame Custodial Center this morning, October 9.
In a statement, Akbayan Party Executive Leader Perci Cendaña said that the question cannot be ruled out if there was a deliberate attempt on De Lima’s life because it was very easy for the suspect to enter the former senator’s cell.
“Second pressing question needs to be asked: Was this a deliberate attempt at Senator De Lima’s life? It seems rather convenient that the suspect should take her hostage so easily,” ani Cendaña.
Akbayan insisted that the Philippine National Police should have an in-depth investigation to prevent the incident from happening again.
Cendaña said the critical breach of security at the headquarters itself was appalling and a failure on the part of the police.
Akbayan has also called for the immediate release of de Lima because until now there is no solid evidence to prove the allegations against him. Teresa Tavares
