3 inmates stabbed by police, De Lima taken hostage

MANILA, Philippines – Former Senator Leila de Lima was taken hostage by three prisoners who had earlier been stabbed by a police officer Sunday morning, October 9 at the PNP Custodial Center inside Camp Crame.

According to Philippine National Police chief Police General Rodolfo Azurin Jr., the incident happened at 6:30 in the morning when three prisoners stabbed a policeman who was delivering food to the inmates with an improvised knife.

“Senator Leila de Lima was even taken hostage. What’s up with that, somehow, our police contained it. Of course, our police ran to the hospital. He is in critical condition,” said Azurin.

He added that the suspects tried to run away but were unsuccessful in their attempt to get away.

De Lima is said to be safe and is currently being examined at a hospital.

“Senator de Lima was not hurt too much. We have him checked up to see how he is doing. Definitely, she is safe,” said Azurin. RNT/JGC
