Uvalde school district suspends police department activities

(NewsNation) — The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District has voted to suspend the activities of the police department and most members of the force will be reassigned, the district announced in a news release Friday.

The move comes as UCISD police and other law enforcement agencies are being investigated for their response to the Robb Elementary massacre, in which 19 students and two teachers were killed.

Two officers, Lieutenants Miguel Hernadez and Ken Mueller, were also granted administrative leave. Mueller has chosen to retire.

The Texas Police Chiefs Association worked with the district to recruit a new police chief and rebuild the department.

The Texas Department of Public Safety will now provide troops to patrol the school district campus. Officers with the UCISD police force will be assigned to other roles in the district, the news release said.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
